Cambodia is everything but boring, so here is a list of 10 great things about it :)))
1. The food is amazing.
We all thought the food would be bad, well all the weight I have gained will tell you otherwise
-Roti: probably one of the best things I have ever eaten. You get it at a vendor on the street for a good 25 cents. It is flour (fried), condensed milk, chocolate, and bananas rolled up like a burrito. It is so good
-Cambodian coffee: It is just coffee made with condensed milk and love and I shed a tear everytime I drink it, amazing stuff
-Spring rolls: preferably from the market. They are cheap as dirt and you definitely have to get at least 10 (haha)
-Sticky rice: I couldn’t tell you how they make this, but it comes in a bamboo stick and it tastes like candy
-Street corn: aka candy as well, it is so sweet.
-Banana chips: I need to find out how they make this. It is literally bananas that I am assuming are fried with sugar on them. SOOOO GOOD
2. what the heck are traffic laws
people here don’t know
I have come close to death multiple times on my bike.
-There are some traffic lights and stop signs, but do people stop? OH NO
-pedestrains first? no not a thing
-lanes in the road? what is that, people drive on whatever side they are feeling that day
-hit and runs? oh yes, a very big thing here. I think people enjoy it.
-speed limit? Again, what is that, people go whatever speed they are feeling that day.
It is month 3 for me and I still don’t understand, but I am way more brave and weave in and out of cars on my bike, it is fun for me now haha
3. Bugs are not as bad as you think.
-I don’t know about y’all, but I expected to be covered from head to toe in mosquito bites.
-Honestly, if you wear bug spray, you’ll be just fine
4. About 40 years ago, Cambodia had a huge genocide, and very few people know about it.
-This country suffers deeply from the effects of it.
-Nearly an entire generation is gone.
-Some of the tactics used to kill is almost, of not as bad as the Holocaust.
-When it was happening, no one knew about it.
-The way people live their lives now are because of this genocide. They are very focused on today and do not plan ahead. Many only have a elementary education because their parents and grandparents were killed.
-The country will more than likely never recover from it.
5. The market is a great place
You are probably thinking, “street food, ew gross.” Oh no, it is cheap and amazing.
-forget grocery stores, everything you could ever need is at an asian market
-I am convinced everything is so good because it is made with love (I know I am cheesy)
-People will definitely try to rip you off if you are a foreigner, but this just gives you an opportunity to bust out the bargaining skills (show them what you got)
-You will not truly experience Asia until you go to the market
6. Embrace the dirt
-yes, Cambodia has alot of dirt
-yes, it is everywhere and it gets everywhere
-yes, it sucks, but embrace it
7. People with light skin are considered lucky
I have taken advantage of this to be honest.
-we can go into houses
-we can crash weddings and funerals
-we walk down the street and people touch our hair and our skin
-it’s because they think we are very wealthy and to them, that is good luck
8.The sunrises and sunsets are unlike anything I have ever seen before.
9. People love to have screaming contests.
I am not kidding! I’ll be riding my bike down the street and someone will say “hello” and it turns into a screaming contest to see who can get the loudest. I might miss this most about Cambodia.
10. The people are the best part of Cambodia.
I didn’t really know what to expect from the people. I have heard some not so good things from previous missionaries and racers, so I honestly expected the worst.
-I dont think I have ever felt so welcomed
-I have never had so many people smile at me while walking down the street.
-People love to say “hello” and “I love you”
Cambodia, you have exceeded all expectations I had and I cannot believe I only have one more month left.
