Last month we have fairly comfortable living space. It was a very western style experience, and most of the team got pretty comfortable, starting to assimilate into that culture. We have almost forgotten we were on the World Race…
… We remembered again this month.
We don’t have ready wifi, we have cockroaches in almost every cupboard, our power has not been on for the last three days, we wash our clothes by hand, we have an extremely small fridge, and the shower is picky about where you point the spray handle.
However, the biggest challenge has been the power. We ran out of prepaid electricity on Saturday, and bought more, but when Lora (one of our hosts) went to enter the code, the entire power unit shut off. Then in the evening it came back on overnight, and then went back out around lunch on Sunday. It has been off since then, and it’s Tuesday.
Also, every few days here in Swaziland, we have massive thunderstorms. That doesn’t help the power situation at all. At one point on Sunday night, the entire city of Manzini lost power at the same time, and small storms have kept the power flickering for the last two days.
Now, I have not experienced anything like Swazi thunderstorms. They’re more frightening to me than tornadoes at times, and at other times, extremely enjoyable.
The winds can be at the speed of most tornadoes, and the clouds are low enough where we live, that you can see them swirling from low to high altitudes. And the lightening! Ish! It can be so close you feel the electricity when it hits the ground! A few of us where out on a Saturday, and lightening hit so close it jolted the building’s power, the thunder was an instantaneous crack with the light we saw, and every person in the building could feel the electricity in their bodies.
This past Sunday, a huge series of Thunderstorms came through around 5pm, and we had lightening from then until about 1am! I’m pretty sure on storm center went right over our house, because one bolt of lightning and the almost simultaneous crack of thunder woke me out of sound sleep!! Also, there was constant thunder and lighting for at least the last two hours of the storms.
Just thought you all should know able these storms 🙂 I’m kind of quirky like that…
