We’ve had a few interesting days. Our ministry is all about girls that are, have been, or could become under circumstances, prostitutes. The girls we are working with daily come from vulnerable situations, and we get the privilege of being part of their redemption stories.
However, the road to redemption is not easy for these girls. They have a lot in their minds, and a lot has happened in their young lives. Some have babies already, and all have horrible family backgrounds
For the last three days, our story has centered around one girl, who for security and protection I will call “Beautiful”. Beautiful has small children, and has been a mother for about 4 years. She was a prostitute for several years, starting at the age of 13. Before that, her step mother had been selling her, so she figured she would run away so she could make that money for herself.
Beautiful now has a good job as a cook, and has the privilege of a home and salary for food. However, she also still has a lot of struggles, a lot of past baggage, and a lot of fear. She is carrying the weight of many past demons, and they still come out every now and then.
On Friday, she lashed out against her baby. Because of past incidences, part of her consequences, was no longer being allowed near the baby. However, it was not the first incident, and the director of our ministry called the baby’s paternal grandmother to come. The hope was to have the mother acknowledge that she needs help making herself better, and until she can, the baby would need to be with his grandmother. This would not be easy though, because the director was not sure Beautiful would be okay with that situation.
At one point, one of the interns walked into the kitchen and asked me to start praying, and to also be ready if she needed help outside with Beautiful.
So I gathered the team, told them the situation, and we spent some time praying. Not nearly enough though. At one point, someone said, “amen” and the group dispersed and began laughing and chatting about other things, but two of us sensed we should not be done praying. Spending a moment in prayer just wasn’t going to be enough in this situation.
Because I had a meeting with someone, I was not able to continue as I would have liked, but she was able to, and did, continue praying for the situation for the entire time it was happening.
After everything had blown over, and I wandered back to the house, I was talking with the director, and she said the outcome could not have been much better. Strongholds and pretenses had come down, the family was very receptive to what was happening, and Beautiful had realized how much help she truly needs.
This was one time of many I would have said I felt like there a need for “Code Red Prayer”. It probably won’t be the last, even for this month, but I have seen what prayer can do in the one time situations.
