Why in the world do we need to apologize? Why does God tell us to confess our sins and say sorry for things we don’t actually think we should? That’s not at all fun, and in some cases, not even logical. I should not have to apologize for someone else’s failure to conduct themselves well. That just seems completely illogical. For example, I shouldn’t have to apologize to a customer because their lawnmower stopped working after only two days. It’s the manufacturer’s fault, or even user error. That’s not my apology to make, but as I represent the company, I apologize.

Why is this the case? Why do employers ask that we apologize to customers, no matter who’s fault it is? To repair a relationship with the customer and keep their business. Why do sports teams require players to publicly acknowledge and apologize for wrongdoings? To connect with disgruntled fans who may change their support because of horrible actions.

Why does God tell us to apologize to others and confess our sins to each other? To repair relationships with others, and show how much he loves us through the community around us.

If we never apologize, for any offense done to our neighbor, real or imagined by them, they will hold that against us. They shouldn’t, but they do. When we take ownership of those offenses, we repair damage in a relationship where we would otherwise not be able to show God’s love. God cannot work through us toward that other person if there is not connection.
