After a 15 hour plane ride, a 19 hour bus ride and 45 min car ride, we finally arrived at our home for the first month, Strandfontein.
The ministry I am working with is actually located about 15 minutes away in an area called Lavender Hill. This area is plagued by gang violence, drugs, absent parents and need for the Gospel. Revelation Ministries, run by Pastors Ivan and Bronwyn Jones, is deeply involved in this community. From feeding children, visiting the elderly, running after school programs, meeting with church members, planting a community garden or just walking door to door to talk with people in the community, Ivan and Bronwyn do it all.
Every time we go out for ministry, people are yelling “Hi Pastor!” “Môre Pastor.” Ivan seems to know everyone and is deeply entrenched in this community and residents know him. The most impressive of all is their deep seeded passion for sharing God’s love and the hope of Jesus Christ.
From the first chat we had I knew this was going to be a great place to start the race. Ivan and Bronwyn looked at us not only as an extra set of hands but as people who need encouragement, support and advice. This perspective immediately calmed my nerves. They have focused on pouring into to us and investing in our personal growth instead of just using us to further their ministry. Concerning themselves with our wellbeing so that we do not get overwhelmed or burnt out, will really help us ease into this next year of ministry.
Every day looks different, but one thing that is never missing are talks about God, spiritual growth, testimonies and words of encouragement and of course a heated game of dominoes.
