May 8th (today for all you in North America) is Mother’s Day in North America and this is my first Mother’s Day away from my amazing mother, Janice.  To some people Mother’s Day isn’t a big deal, to some people it’s just another day where you buy a card or pick up some flowers and hug a nice lady you call Mom.  But for me today is a really special day.  You see, I’m kind of a Momma’s girl.  And when I say “kind of” I mean I really am.
I love my Mum.  She is my best friend, she is a wise counselor, she is a healer and a caretaker, she is God’s love embodied, she is a pillar of strength and comfort, she taught me so much about life and laughter and what it means to be selfless.
…Plus she did pop me out of her womb 24 years ago, and an act of love like that isn’t something you take lightly!
My Mum was born to love.  Seriously.
She has this beautiful ability to honestly love the people that walk through our front door, whether they’re just there for dinner or whether they need a place to live – she welcomes them with open arms, listens with understanding ears, and cries with honest tears.  She loves people who have been told they are unlovable.  She receives those who have been made outcasts.  She values those who have been treated as worthless.
My mother is a woman of perseverance.
My mother is a woman of faith.
My mother is a woman of laughter.
My mother is a woman of acceptance.
My mother is a woman of grace.
My mother is a woman of tireless affection.
My mother is a woman of authority.
My mother is a woman of light.
My mother is a woman of hope.
My mother is a woman of joy.
My mother is a woman of prayer.
My mother is a woman of compassion.
My mother is the woman who gave me life.
The woman who called me “Princess” before I understood the full meaning of the word,
the woman who has unknowingly made her life an example of a life I would be honored to follow.
My mother is my mine.
And nothing, not even the distance between us, can change that.
I love you Mommy.
