Just in case you were wondering where I am
Im currently in Bachasarai Ukraine. We landed in Kiev a few days ago, then shortly after we loaded a train which we rode for 16 hours when we arrived out this, our final destination. Once off the train we packed 7 people, 6 packs, 6 backpacks, food bags, and pillow into a small Ukrainian car. I was really impressed first with the fact that that I didn’t freak out about the small space, and second that it all fit!!! So then we finally got to our new home. Im not sure what I was expecting, but all this is very different. We are staying in these tree house/hut things on memory foam mattresses. Everything is SO FOREIGN! I mean I guess I knew that no one was going to speak English, but I don’t think I really understood the weight of that. The only 2 people that speak English are our translators, and that is somewhat spotty. J Every conversation we have is somewhat strained. We discovered quite quickly that the girls were expected to work in the kitchen and the kitchen only, then rest. Hahah. This seemed pretty sweet the first day when the boys were doing manual labor, but today we are really bored. We washed clothes today, which consisted of a wash basin and the river.
So one interesting thing that happened… Our first day here we took a “bath” in this room with a boiling pot of water, and I got a 2nd degree burn on my hand. Definitely thought I was going to die. I lived, with only a minor scar. Another strange culture fact- Ukrainian men wear speedos.
Other than that us women have been cooking and cleaning. I climbed a castle today. Fun. Im getting really good at using squatty pottys. Well back to Ukraine! Paka! (oh and im learning Russian) Sorry if I repeated myself this has been an ongoing blog…
