As the bus pulled away I looked around and saw nothing except the dust it left behind.  I had been on the bus for 3 hours and it had not arrived at the requested location of San Juan. I looked around at my teammates Bek and Holly and my squad leader Tara and all we could do was laugh and shrug our shoulders. What to do now? We walked a couple steps and discovered a “resort.” A small pool, bathrooms, and a tiki hut where the Filipino men had gathered to watch a fight on television. Our desire had been to spend the day surfing in San Juan but at this point we weren’t sure where we were or how to reach the desired beach. As we walked a little further we came across a group of fishing boats shaped similar to a canoe. A guy approached us and offered t o take us in his boat to a private island. Private island?   Done. We arrived at what I guess you could call an island, a small, secluded beach where we spent an hour relaxing. From there, he dropped us off at an Americanized restaurant where we devoured pizza and milk shakes (yum!) before finding a motorbike to take us to a bus stop where we found the next bus home.

Flash back to the day before, we planned a trip to Camp John Hay which is a community of hotels, restaurants, shopping, and leisurely activities built for American soldiers. Tara convinced us to dress in 70’s clothing so please excuse my comical appearance in these pictures.  The first thing we did upon arriving was visit a butterfly sanctuary where we posed for pictures with the butterflies on our faces and clothing. We laughed the entire time at the comical man who worked there who posed us for pictures and continually claimed in his cute accent that the butterflies “na like you.” From there we went horseback riding and had the opportunity to gallop through the mountains. The day continued to progress and without boring you with all the details, I will just say by evening time we had crashed a VIP media party with the absolute BEST food I have tasted all year, smoked a cigar with a lonely millionaire who touched my heart, and dined nearby the widow of the former Filipino president. An entire day of fun for less than $10.00 American dollars, love it!
