After serving tea and lunch at the Kawan house, we head over to Lighthouse which is a drop in center for the homeless and drug addicted people to come and have dinner.  My team alternates each day between helping to prepare and serve dinner and working in the bakery making yummy treats.   The bakery has a wonderful program for drug addicted people to come get cleaned up and hired for a profession. The trainees spend 18 months training in the bakery. They are provided a place to stay and a small wage, and are expected to stay off drugs. If they can save a little bit of their pay during the program, a partner bank will match their savings. They can also get assistance in getting a job or starting a small business upon completion of the program. The trainees act as our teachers while in the bakery and it is quite fun learning how to make perfectly round rolls, and cute little custard cakes.

This is Cecille.  She is a volunteer at Lighthouse and rides her bike to work every day.  She wears arm bands in the midst of the heat in order to protect her skin from the sun.  She is fun and sassy and we love working with her.

One evening a week, my team meets up with a couple others teams located in the area and heads out to do street evangelism.  We talk and pray with prostitutes, street vendors, and encounter many of the same homeless people we see at Lighthouse and Kawan.  It is sad to literally step over people who are sleeping on the streets.  We had an interesting experience one night with a girl who lives in an alley way and sniffs glue.  We believe she is demon possessed and hope to see her again and pray with her before leaving Malaysia.
