First you wake up to the melodious harmony of different
alarms that all go off around the same time (living in a 4 bedroom house with
46 people who all feel the need to set their alarms), followed by stray dogs
and roosters screeching their vocal chords away.
Next, you take your doxy (malaria meds) But be sure not to
spill them all over the kitchen floor in the morning while people are scurrying
about trying to make breakfast, because trust me, it takes a while to pick them
up.
Breakfast (if you were lucky enough to get kitchen space in
the morning to make it) is followed by a 45 minute walk to the ministry site.
We start off with VBS (vacation bible school) and teach them from the word of
god, usually by acting out a skit, and reciting verses.
Next, we play games
with them. i.e. baseball, patty cake games, volleyball, frisbee. In the
afternoon when it gets extremely hot, we take our lunch break – PB&J
sandwiches EVERY DAY …. that alone explains itself. Lunch was usually followed
by prayer walks, which consisted of walking around and praying for anyone in
need. We also helped out by snapping thousands of peas, which is what most of
the people did for a living. Snapping peas was great, because it gave us time
to sit down and get to know the families.
I really connected with a little boy named Alessi. He was
ten years old, and extremely smart. I taught him quite a bit of English, and it
was awesome to see him catch on so quickly. His mother was so grateful to see
me teaching him every day and would often times cook me food. Homemade
Dominican food is delicious… let me tell you. All in all, I couldn’t have asked
for a better way to kick off the world race.
This next month, is going to be much different. Blake
Rushing, who was originally part of my team (team green light) had to be
switched to another team. Team reckless had a guy go home due to health
reasoning and Blake, being the responsible, amazing brother in Christ, was
chosen to fill his spot. It’s not quite the same without him here, but I know
that God called him into that group for a reason. J
Our place in Haiti is absolutely gorgeous. We have a
beautiful mountain view in the front of our house, and the ocean in the back
yard. There is so much work to be done here, and the weather is significantly
hotter than that of the DR, but I’m looking forward to different types of
ministry. We’re only on day 2 here, so Ill update more later.
Thanks again to all of my supporters! I have a little less
than 3,000 to Raise, any help is appreciated
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God 1 John
