The following is a sermon/message God has placed on my heart here the last few days and I felt like it needed to be shared with more than jus those I have physically sitting in front of me in church here in Colombia. So for that reason it is now a blog! ![]()
There has been a phrase or verse from Scripture that has continued to come to mind the last several weeks. God has been showing how I have never fully understood this verse. It’s something that Jesus said on the cross right before He died. The only place I personally have paid attention to this verse at was in Luke 23:46. Jesus says, “Father into your hands I commit my Spirit.” I once heard a sermon about the life and death of Stephen and how he says something very similar as he is being stoned. That is found in Acts 7:59, “Lord, Jesus, Receive my Spirit.” But this didn’t help my understanding of this phrase. Both of these times are referring to men saying this as they are dying. Both Jesus and Stephen know that they are seconds from death, so they relinquish their spirit to the Father. I would say most of the church today would say that this is an appropriate thing to say right before a person dies.
But then what do we do with the exact same phrase when it is found in Psalm 31:5. David’s nowhere near death. Granted he is running for his life from Saul, but death is not imminent. Yet he says, “Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.”
After reading this I had to stop and reevaluate the meaning of this statement.
I’m seeing now that this is not just something to say as I’m dying. But it is something I need to say/pray daily. “God, today, into your hands I commit my spirit. My flesh is weak and if You are not in control of my life and my spirit, nothing good will come out of it.”
We need to daily offer our Spirit to God. It’s the same concept of dying daily to yourself. Just as Jesus calls us to do in Matthew 16:24, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
So in a way we should say this as we are dying. We are called to die daily to ourselves. So daily we pray and abandon our Spirit to the Father so that He can live fully in and through us.
When we do this, we know we will be ready to do the work He has prepared for us. We will be ready to hear his voice. We will be living in His will and purpose for our lives.
So my question to you is:
Are you ready to abandon your spirit to the Father? Do you trust Him enough to do this? It is a daily choice and decision. We can do it one day and never think of it the next. It is more than that is a minute by minute decision to offer our spirit to God. So will you join me in offering up your spirit to Christ at this moment and every moment He allows us to live here on this earth?
