Thursday morning we woke up early to catch a van ride that promised to be waiting for us at 3am outside our hotel. The problem was that the van never showed. We had reservations for a 5am bus ride to El Salvador and not much time to spare. After many phone calls we were soon on our way speeding through Managua to the bus depot with only 45 minutes to spare. We arrived at 5:02am and our bus was gone. God did not want us on that bus! So we groggily pulled out our sleeping bags and all 7 of us slept on the floor of the bus depot for a few hours. Around 11am we were on a bus headed to El Salvador.
I don’t remember a whole lot of the bus ride because I had taken a Dramamine, which kept me from getting carsick but also puts me to sleep. We arrived at our hotel at 11pm and got off the bus and started unloading our bags. A short while later a guy came up and said “Sarah Dager” and held up my yellow medical card (which I keep in my passport). A sickening feeling hit me as I realized that he’d found that card on the floor of the bus, which meant my passport was missing. The bus was getting ready to leave as it still needed to drop off people but Sean, Lauren and I jumped back on in a desperate search to find it. It felt like hours had passed but I’m sure it wasn’t all that long before Sean found it. It blended in with the seats and had slipped down the side of one. Praise God! I thought surely I’d be staying in El Salvador, which wasn’t a pleasant thought.
As in most places we’d been to we were greeted at the door of the hotel by a man carrying a rifle (security) and were soon ushered to our rooms for a few hours of sleep. The following day we had another 6 hour bus ride into Guatemala City and soon after were pulling up at the house we rented for the month. It’s beautiful and we feel so blessed.
Tomorrow we are working at a local hospital and the next few days we will be connecting with a bunch of different ministries and figuring out where we are supposed to get plugged in.
I will try to post some pictures soon.
Blessings from Antigua!
