Friday, August 21st was race day.   All four teams were dropped off in downtown Pretoria with instructions to take a team picture with a well-known local statue.   The day was spent running from one place to the next.   We had a three-hour train ride to Johannesburg.   We had to go to the Johannesburg Zoo and find/take pictures with four of the “Big Five” game animals of Africa (buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and rhino).

Then we had to order and eat a “mixed platter” from a local restaurant while getting our faces painted.   Everything looked really appetizing although none of us knew what we were eating.   Afterwards we were told there was duck (very good), lamb, prawns, and a variety of other items.   Following that we went to the Apartheid Museum and had to find and answer a bunch of questions on the events and time of this period.   Lastly we had to go to the 50th floor of the Carlton Center (the highest point in Africa), locate the Ponte City building and get our picture taken with it in the background.   During the course of the day we ran, we hunted down conveys (local taxi vans), and maneuvered as fast as possible through the city.   I’m sure we looked quite silly being the only white people in the area, racing around with face paint on, and scarfing down food as soon as it arrived at the table.   The end of the day we had a funny experience waiting to leave on the train (see next blog).

We didn’t find out till the next day that Team Concrete had actually won and really it didn’t matter.   I love the entire C Squad and am grateful to experience so much with them.
