Tropical palm trees, lush green mountains, sparkling sandy beaches and turquoise waves pretty much have us spell-bound as we ride along the twisty roads of Phuket. After about an hours drive we turn down a muddy path and darkness closes in. We pass many shacks similar to the squatter’s camps in Africa and finally stop in front of a row of them.
Lately the rain has been pouring down and has caused the ground to become quite muddy. We tip-toe are way through it trying not to fall.
Mark and Sharon Biddell (the founders of the SHE program) have Burmese friends that are waiting for us as it’s become a tradition to spend Monday nights sharing a meal and a word from God.
This all came about a while back when Mark was asked if he knew of anyone that wanted a baby. The parents had left Burma to escape violence. The baby was premature, sickly and the Mom wasn’t able to breast feed. They could not afford to buy milk. They loved their baby very much. They wanted the best for him even if that meant giving him up so that he would have the chance to live.
And so the Biddells took it upon themselves to deliver milk for the baby and food for the family every week. The parents were so grateful that they insisted Mark name the baby. He is a sweet little one named Moses.
And so the Monday night tradition was born.
We gather in the tiny tin house and sit on the floor, playing with the children and sharing a simple meal of rice with chicken in coconut broth.
Our interpreter is not in attendance so we use a lot of hand gestures instead. Our Thai SHE (Self Help & Empower) sisters have come with us and are able to communicate with one of the Burmese women that speaks a little Thai.
I sit there watching the SHE girls attempt to teach the Burmese men how to write in Thai. Everyone is smiling and enjoying this sweet time of fellowship. Before we leave Mark prays in English for our Burmese friends. One of the girls from SHE interprets it for the other Thai girls and our Burmese friends smile knowing we prayed for them but not understanding exactly what we prayed. Moses’ parents now know the Lord, thanks in part to Mark and Sharon’s weekly visits. We may not have been able to communicate with words but there was no denying the joy of the Lord was in that place.
