When we first arrived to Panajachel I decided to be on the building team to help construct new homes, roofs, and outhouses for people that lost their homes in the mudslides as a result from Hurricane Stan. This work was quite exhausting and made me very dirty and dusty but each night I slept well and it was quite rewarding. My pride and joy is the outhouse I helped to build! See the picture.

However, when I rejoined the group after my husband came to visit, our teams needed help on the buying and delivery crew. Now this job was really fun for me without the dirt and I got to buy presents for people! We took the list of all the needs of the people and Tauna and I hit the town and bought pilas (big, heavy, outdoor sinks for washing dishes and clothes), beds (and 1 for a handicap girl that can never leave her home), stoves (1 for a women with tuberculosis), an eye appointment for an elderly man and glasses, native clothes for women, electricity for homes, and groceries.
I loved being on the buying and delivery team because when we delivered all the goodies to the families their faces just lit up and we were able to show God’s love. When we would get to their house to deliver a gift we would tell them the gift was from Jesus and He sent us to them.
I am here in Guatemala because I love the Lord, and because of the love I have for Him, I want to serve and help others.
If our devotion is to the cause of humanity, we will be quickly defeated and broken-hearted, since we will often be confronted with a great deal of ingratitude from other people. But if we are motivated by our love for God, no amount of ingratitude will be able to hinder us from serving one another. – Oswald Chambers
