Transnistrea-
-functional, sustainable, independent “pretend” country
-many bicyclers, young and old
-Sheriff corporation monopoly: owns soccer team, tv station,
grocery store, gas station, cell phone company
and convenience stores
-citizens have multiple citizenships: Transnistrea, AND a
second in a neighboring country (Ukraine,
Moldova, or Russia)
-fashion forward culture-tall tall heels
-random goats tied up in front yards

-bright red tulips everywhere!
-beautiful colorful gates
-if you turn off the main roads, you have only dirt roads
without street signs or directional markers
-decent grocery store: huge assortment of chocolate; separate counter for pastries, candies and cookies (and
dates); only canned goods are corn, peas and beans; yet there are many choices
for canned olives; the deli sells 12 types of salami/ham but there is little
beef and no pork in the whole place!
-brands that seem
to relate to those familiar to me: Mr. Muscle cleaners-Mr. Clean, P =Pledge,
Funeti Hazelnut Spread=Nutella
-milk isn’t sold in plastic gallons or
cardboard cartons…nope, sold in bags.
-small buggies
and baskets, small conveyors and narrow isles all contribute to the habit of
frequent/daily shopping trips
….and these are just a few things I’ve observed in my wonderful two weeks spent in Transnistrea 🙂 ….
