We walk from place to place amidst enormous mountains, cobbled alley ways, mud puddles, and wide tall grasses of rice fields. This morning we walked to Megh’s (contact) primary church for a prayer meeting. There was worship with conga drums and a tambourine: no big organs, bell ringers, guitars, or spot lights. The church members sang out loud in praise to the Lord. Since I haven’t yet totally grasped the Nepali language, I swayed along to the music and read my Bible. I’m currently reading through 2 Chronicles and really enjoying learning Biblical history.

One of our team shared a quick message that was translated in Nepalese for the members. It was short and clear. Her choice of message couldn’t have been more practical for the cultural: Romans 12, The body of Christ. Starting with verse 2 and continuing through verse 8 encouraged the Nepali people to live outside the confines of cultural religion and seek a renewed spirit. As each one of us are different and thus uniquely gifted, we can act in ways that utilize our special skills to further the community of God’s kingdom.

 Romans 12:2-8

2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. 3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,5so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

The scripture spoke not just to the Nepali people, but to me as well. I whole heartedly believe that people are people all over the world. Romans 12 instructs us as Christians to be a community of believers. We have each been blessed with special gifts. Living with a team for 11 months along the World Race has emphasized the variety of gifts God bestows. Though we often envy others’ gifts, the world would not spin without God’s genius. He scattered about his blessings so that we might complement each other, not compete.

The road has not been entirely smooth, but I’ve finished strong. God has taught me to appreciate other’s gifts and encourage their talents. He has opened my eyes to new blessings and confirmed others. I think my awareness and discernment would have come in time, but the WR has sped up the process which will allow me to dig deeper and more fully apply the blessings God has bestowed me.
