This is what the Lord said to me a few weeks ago, and the profound meaning of such a simple phrase is overwhelming. There is nothing I can do to disappoint the creator of the universe! That’s insane. Let that sink in. Our Father will never be displeased with what He has created. That takes all the stress and anxiety out of everything. That’s not to say we won’t ever make mistakes, or decisions won’t be made that we’ll regret. But in our Father’s eyes we are everything He could have ever hoped for. So if we are unable to disappoint the most perfect being there ever was, or will be, why are we so scared to move?
I know so many people who are so crippled by fear of making the wrong decision that instead they end up making no decision. There are so many people that settle. That choose comfort. That put themselves in unhealthy situations whether that be in their education, relationships, or employment. We end up choosing a toxic life just because we’re scared of what the “wrong” decision could lead to. And let me tell you, staying stagnant, while it may not seem like a conscious choice, is a far more dangerous decision to make.
You see, God created human beings and saw that they were good. Do you need me to say that again, God created you to be human and saw that you were, in your entirety, good. So why are we scared? Why do we fear to step into the unknown?
I think it’s because ultimately we believe that we are not good enough. We believe that we are not worth it. We don’t trust that when God said we were good, that He truly meant it. We’ve lived so long in Christian circles that tell us that being human is wrong. Now people might not come right out and say that, but how often do we hear things that lead us to believe our human nature is a problem. Don’t get me wrong, I hate my sinful tendencies just as much as the next person, and I believe that the Lord is shaping me to look more and more like His son every day, but that’s not to say the human part of me is a problem.
I think the thing is, we’re all human and as much as we’d like to think we’ve grown and healed and moved past things, we will always be human. And honestly, that’s perfectly okay. God wanted us to be humans, and he wants us to strive everyday to take the next step closer to him, but ultimately he knows we are humans. He wants us to be humans. And he never expects us to be anything else. In the most wonderfully gracious way. And so we can’t keep thinking that we’re not humans. We have to know we’re human. And we have to know that that is okay. We also have to know that the people we love are humans, and that that is okay. Sometimes we don’t have the best desires and we have to give ourselves grace, and sometimes, the people we love don’t have the best desires and we have to give them grace. We are human and we have to give ourselves grace to be so. They are humans and we have to give them grace to be so. Love yourself fully. Love the people around you fully. Let yourself be human and let them be human. And in the most beautiful way strive to walk toward Christ together…as brilliantly broken people. You are exactly how God wants you to be. Human.
