1. DO NOT bring medicine for everything under the sun. You can find whatever you need overseas. Just bring advil, sleep meds, anti-diarrhea, and pepto-bismal tablets. Malaria meds- 1-3 months worth.
2. DO bring tampons. Hard to find
3. ON TRAVEL DAYS KEEP YOUR WATER BOTTLE WITH YOU. Don’t put it in your checked bag. You might have a long bus ride after your flight and won’t be able to access it (learned from experience) so just take it through airport security empty and fill it up before you board the plane.
4. Wherever you are in the world, turn on the light when you go to the bathroom at night and wear shoes. You never know when 2 foot long snakes or spiders bigger than your fist might be lurking…
5. When leaving your hostel or place of residence always make sure you have the written address of the place with you. ALWAYS.
6. Try your best to keep your phone charged for emergencies (like needing to connect to wifi to find something)
7. Bring multiple headphones, pens and couple of small notebooks. They go fast!
8. Bring a towel that you can through away, because you will when you discover sarongs. They’re cheap, light-weight and can be used as shawls, head covering, skirt and towel.
9. Sleeping bag should be between 20 and 40 degrees. I got a 40 and nearly froze in Guatemala during the rainy season.
10. Bring something from home to remind you of family. My Aunt Lauren put together a Smile Book for me and my family wrote all kinds of notes and things in there for me for all the special holidays.
