I am in love with Rwanda. It is so green and beautiful. The scenery is breathtaking and I had no idea it would be this gorgeous. It is known as the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’. My team and I arrived Saturday afternoon after a 28 hour bus ride from Kenya. We crossed two borders and the Nile River before arriving in Kigali. Our ministry contact, Pastor Robert, was waiting for us when we arrived. We walked through town and down a few steep hills before coming to his home.
When we walked through the front door, all of us were in awe and I quickly determined this was going to be a good month filled with many blessings. We are living in a home with a living room, dining room, running water, a Western toilet, and beds. All of these comforts seemed too good to be true. Once we finished the tour, he sat us down and washed our feet. I think we were all in disbelief.
Pastor Robert has never hosted a World Race team before, but he seems like a professional host to me. He has 7 beautiful children–5 daughters, and 2 sons. They are all serving us by making our beds and meals, doing our laundry, and even washing our dirty shoes. He told us to feel at home and consider him and his wife our parents. He has taken a liking to me because of my age. It is quite sweet and endearing…although I’m not quite sure why he laughed so hard when I told him how old I was. He makes sure the trek to and from the church isn’t too much for me, and has offered me rides on his motorcycle.
Our ministry this month is very similar to last month. We have the mornings free, while the afternoons we spend going door to door and then we take turns preaching in the evening. I have learned that we are considered girls because we are not yet married. The term women is reserved for those who are married or who have children.
We are going to have quite a workout every day. I have been coming home exhausted from the trek but thankful to experience such a beautiful place. I’m so glad our route was changed to bring us here…
Our squad leader, Andrew, is joining our team for the month. He surprised us this morning by decorating the breakfast table with roses, candy, and valentines. It was fun to wake up to and definitely made us all feel loved and special.
I am sending you lots of love across the miles. You are all in my thoughts. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day my friends. Love you so!!
