Kachibora, Kenya
A beautiful place in the western part of the country. It took us nine hours to get here by bus from Nairobi…the same amount of time it took to fly to Kenya from Thailand. On our way we encountered zebras and saw lots of beautiful African scenery. I was excited to be traveling to a place in Kenya I had not yet been to. When we got off the bus, we loaded up onto a van and took a 45 minute ride down a bumpy dirt road to our destination.
We are living on a compound and helping with Deliverance Church. The compound also houses a school and an office building, with a bedroom attached where the six of us sleep on bunk beds. This is where we spend the majority of our time as we also eat in this building as well. The compound has a large grassy area where you will often find cows and sheep grazing. While school is in session we are unable to walk outside without the children running up to shake our hands and yell out “Mzungu” which means ‘white person’. I have taught them how to high five and they just love it. This happens numerous times throughout the day as our bathrooms are located a good distance away from our living area.

Our mornings are spent going door to door in various villages, sharing our lives and the love of Christ with those we meet. We spend our evenings taking turns giving messages at church. I have found the spiritual climate much different here than where we had been in Asia. Everyone is extremely friendly and open. They are very welcoming and often just want us to pray prayers of blessings for them and their children. I have had moments of frustration where I felt the pastors were parading us around, but for the most part it has been a great experience.
Our days off, have been spent going into a town called Kitale. Last week we went and spoke at a high school assembly. We shared different things about American culture and education. Afterwards we went to a wild animal park where we got to pet a rhinoceros, and giraffe. We also rode ostriches…another animal I never thought I would ride!!
The pastor’s daughter, Faith, offered to braid my hair after church one day. I happily obliged as I was looking forward to not having to worry about it. I left them in for about a week before I got tired of them. You will see me featured below in my team’s cribs video after I took the braids out. I look quite ridiculous but I hope you enjoy. (We didn’t realize how dark it was when we started filming, but you’ll get the general idea.)
