It was around this time last year that I decided to apply for this amazing experience…The World Race. I have to laugh now thinking about all the things that I feared and almost kept me from leaving the comforts of home. Some are more legitimate than others, but I am realizing with each passing day, that there was no need to worry or fear. I thought I would write this blog as an encouragement for those of you interested, but find yourself holding back and questioning if you really have it in you to take the risk to leave everything you know for 11 months. Here are a few of the fears that almost kept me back…
Money
When I first signed up, I had only been on two short term mission trips…both of which I paid for myself. The support and fundraising seemed like an impossible task for me, but to God it is nothing…really. He provides and loves to increase our faith in this area. I encourage you to keep a journal and start recording all the ways he comes through financially. My shots were covered, and my travel insurance and travel gear was all gifted to me, so do not let this be a factor in keeping you from going. He knows all that you need and this should not keep you from applying. I am only at the half-way point of the race and, with my monthly supporters, am fully funded!! God is faithful.
My Age
I was worried I would be the oldest one on the trip (I’m 30) and God has blessed me with 4 other squadmates who are the same age as me.
The Food
I am an extremely picky eater and so far I have yet to go hungry. I have enjoyed the food in every country I have been to so far.
Cold showers and Squatty potties
Not as bad as you think…when nature calls you respond and don’t complain because everyone else on your team is doing the same thing. Cold showers or bucket showers are surprisingly easy when you are just thankful to smell clean again. It’s not ideal, but when it is your only option, you take it.
What to do about my car? House? Job? Etc…
Pray and God will direct. Leave it in his hands and trust him. He will come through and your faith will grow. If this is God’s will and plan for your life, there are no obstacles too big for him.
