Wow, we are in
Honduras!! It is month 1, week 1 of my
World Race experience and let me tell you…we are being spoiled rotten by this
ministry!
Many of you know that my
squad was supposed to begin our journey in Bulgaria, but due to ticket prices
being astronomical and the Olympics taking place in Europe…we took a bus from
Washington DC to New York, boarded a plane to Costa Rica, jumped on another bus
to a hostel in Nicaragua for one night and then finally took another bus ride
to Zion Gate Ministries in Honduras. And
boy were we exhausted, and excited, and overwhelmed, and READY to start our
service.
It was an odd feeling to be
in a place I have never been to before but to pull up to a building that I
totally recognized, thanks to pictures and blogs from the amazing Z Squad! Then to top things off…I had a note addressed
to me hanging on the wall from my friends Jen and Dusty! What a blessing. I felt loved instantly, as did my whole
squad, thanks to signs and notes posted on the wall welcoming us from Z
Squad. It really made our arrival
special! Love you Z Squad!!
Our contact here is named
Tony. He is from the States and decided
to follow God early in his Christian walk and moved to Honduras. He took that a step further and reached out
to those who most just overlooked. He
works with, prays for, provides for, educates and brings to Christ, boys from
the streets who have no future otherwise.
These young men are such a blessing to everyone they come in contact
with! They have a joy about them that is
infectious and just plain FUN. And all
this after spending one day with them.
They are easy to talk to despite the language difference (I can speak
Spanglish on a good day) and they are so affectionate that you just feel love
radiating from them.
The grounds we are living on
for this month contains Tony’s house, which also houses about 8 boys and 2
girls, a common building which has the kitchen, a rec room and a tiered area
that about half our squad is staying in (in their tents). There is a bathroom with 2 shower stalls and
3 toilets for our WHOLE SQUAD! Yup, you
heard right folks, boys and girls sharing.
And yes it is a tad awkward at times, but it’s all just part of the
fun. My team is tenting outside in an
area we have fondly deemed, “The Ruins.”
It consists of a fire circle, flat areas and some brick towers that are
about 6 feet tall and kind of look like ruins, LOL.
And, finally, I know y’all
want to know what I’m eating. Yesterday
we had chicken BBQ sandwiches and spaghetti.
Today we ate a breakfast of eggs, cheese, plantains, tortillas, refried
beans and avocado. For lunch we had mac
and cheese and chowed down on some Little Caesar’s pizza for dinner. It is amazing food here!! There is also a little on-site store that
stocks North American favorites such as Coke, A&W Root Beer, Sprite,
Snickers, Oreos and ice cream. All the
proceeds go directly to the ministry and we all get spoiled in the process! Spoiled Rotten
