In my last post “UNDER THE BRIDGE THEY SAID “YES” I talk about the work my team and I were doing in Vietnam. It was incredible to be able to partner with men and women who are so passionate about sharing the gospel.
On one occasion, one of the girls I got the opportunity to work with was sharing with me how when she started her current semester, there was 16 people in her class that had never heard of Jesus. Now, half way through the semester, every person in her class knows Jesus.
During English class she was the quietest one, so quiet that it was so hard to hear her. But this quiet girl is so passionate about God that when she speaks about Him with anyone, you can hear her from a mile away.
At the end of her story, she looked at me with urgency and said, “It is every believers responsibility to share the gospel with all who are around them. If they aren’t sharing, then what are they doing?” This 19-year-old college student, who lives in a closed country, dropped the mic on me.
I left that conversation feeling convicted and fired up to share the gospel. It’s true; it is our responsibility to share the gospel with all who are around us… so why don’t we? Our brothers and sisters in Christ, in Vietnam, know the dangers of sharing the gospel, yet they know that it’s worth risking it all to share the message with everyone around.
Through this student, I realized that back in America we have become so comfortable that we don’t step out of our comfort zone. Many Christians say that by the way they live their lives, people will know Christ, but they don’t share the gospel verbally. Then there are the others, who like to share the gospel but don’t live out what they preach, or share it with love or grace.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe that all Christians do this, but there are so many who live their lives without inviting non-believers into it, like Jesus did. Jesus would not only surround himself with His disciples, but also with sinners who were considered to be the lowest of the low. We need to surround ourselves with both non-believers and believers who call us up, and challenge us to step out of our comfort zones. We can’t choose one or the other.
I know fear of man is a real thing, and it can be scary to talk to our non-believing friends about the gospel. “What will they say?” “How should I share it?” “Do I even have the right words to say?” “What if I don’t have enough knowledge of the Bible?”
Those are lies from the enemy! Don’t let it stop you. Grab some friends and go to a coffee shop, or to the park and just talk with people. Ask God to bring you one person a day that you can befriend. The best way I have found is to share your story with people. Share with them what God has done in your life and the ways He has changed it.
This young girl changed my life, and I don’t think I ever want to go back. Is fear of man still scary? Yes, but I choose to push through, because the gospel is too important not to share.
Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone?
