A roof top in Haiti has been my bed for almost 2 weeks now because hot can not even begin to describe my room. The first night I woke up drenched in sweat. Luckily, I found a solution… Roof top hammocking. Best decision I have ever made. Every night I get to enjoy mountains on one side and city lights on the other side. I lather up the bug spray and fall asleep in the breeze. It’s a wonderful thing.
Other than that our ministry this month has been going NONSTOP.
We are staying at a fairly large mission base called Mission of Hope Haiti. Since being here I have embodied the essence of manual labor. The first day out we scrubbed glue off of the cement orphanage walls. In the afternoon we mowed the grass… with a machete, because who needs a lawn mower?
The next day, while some people poured cement for a new school building, my team filled in a mile long trench for the newly installed pipes. This past week and a half I have been painting brick walls with the brightest colors I have ever seen in my life.
Painting has been fun for the most part, but also draining because we had been doing it for a week and a half straight. And then one day everything changed. A team of us were painting inside a tiny room in one of the orphanages. Everyone was in a little bit of a slump that morning. You could feel the lack of joy. One of my teammates was sick of the grumpy atmosphere so she prompted that we pray. We prayed joy and completion over ourselves and just like that we were consumed by it, we were joyfully painting the walls from top to bottom singing and laughing the entire time.
When we had finished up the painting it started to down pour rain. Out of nowhere this 8 year old autistic orphan girl, named Angela, waved us to join her as she danced in the rain. She was worshiping and praying in Creol. One by one she went around our circle and joined our hands together. A boisterous song of praise left our lips and flooded the air. We were altogether praying and worshiping in the Haiti rain. It was amazing and one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever been a part of. Being present with Lord in a foreign land with a little girl who knows no English worshiping the same God. Our day started off with bad attitudes but we gave our burdens to the Lord and asked Him for joy, he honored that and I think it’s safe to say that my heart has been made full.
