A day in Costa Rica: World Racer style
I wake up at 6:00 am. Crusty eyed and drowsy. I have my moment with the two most important men in my life Jesus and Coffee.
At about 7 am my team and I gather around the breakfast table with our hosts, 60 year old married couple: DonTony and DonaRosita.
As I am enjoying this delicious plate of rice, beans, and hot sauce I realize that I may have never even liked pancakes for breakfast in the first place.
7:45 am I do the dishes and put on my gloves. It’s time to create some stairs.
8:30 am I carry a 20 pound bag of cement up a hill, and when I say hill I mean a mini mountain. This is some tedious work, so of course in order to pass time, my team and I pretend we are in a musical and start singing every Disney song we know… Even if we get the words wrong. (Mulan seemed to be a reoccurring theme.) We had to keep bringing up supplies to make cement for the stairs.
9:00 am We begin the stair making process. One of my teammates starts to frame, in order for our stairs to hold its form. I start mixing the gravel, water, powder cement, and sand altogether. Then after its mixed we start to pour it into the frames. We began from the middle of the hill/mini mountain and worked our way up. We did this until..
12:00 pm got back just in time for rice, beans, cabbage, and a little bit of chicken. Oh and of course my hot sauce! After lunch we have a break until 2 pm.
1:00 pm I play a little harmonica in my bed and then accidentally fall asleep.
2:00 pm I’m awoken.
2:15 pm Start back at it again. Same as before.
3:15 pm Coffee break. Never forget the coffee breaks. Costa Ricans don’t play with their coffee. Jesus and coffee always. (This lasts about 20 minutes)
5:30 pm We finally finish for the day. Completed about 6 stairs throughout the day. Which may seem like a few… But these stairs are thick and wide.
6:00 pm DonTony tells us he would like it if we spent 30 minutes collecting rocks from the dirt road. Of course we don’t say no, so we head on out to the road and collect as many rocks as our hearts desire.
6:35 pm We start our team time and debrief our thoughts and day.
7:50 pm Get a little laundry done
8:15 pm Dinner time! We all sit and eat together. Rice, beans, salami, and the most delicious lemonade I have ever had in my life. And of course not forgetting the guest of honor, my hot sauce.
9:20 pm The team decided to play an unruly competitive game of Phase 10. Sadly, I did not win.
10:30 pm I hit the sack. Takes about 3 seconds for me to fall asleep, I’m addiosing on a long day of work.
This is just how one day of many went. Almost every day looked different.
This month was a month I had to purposely choose to be in the joy of the Lord, but he always comes through.
