As most of you already know, the Dominican Republic was hit by a category 4 hurricane two days ago. So here is a little summary about how the past two days have been!

From Monday until Wednesday we have been preparing for the storm. Everyone worked together to help around the property. After hanging up tarps, boarding windows, and cutting down anything that could potentially fall during the storm, we were ready for Maria to hit! On Wednesday night, everyone slept in their dorms. I covered most of my stuff except my sleeping stuff, with my footprint. That night, I slept pretty well until around 5am when I felt something dripping on my head. I was half asleep so instead of trying to fix the problem, I moved my bed an inch away from the water and went back to sleep. I woke up again around 6:30am by rolling into a puddle of water that was forming on my bed. That time it finally hit me that the roof was leaking. I used my flashlight and got a couple buckets that we had prepared in the corner. A couple people also woke up and realized the ceiling near them was leaking and that there was a lot of water running down the walls. After putting the buckets under as much as the water we could, everyone finally went back to sleep.

We ate all of our meals in the pavilion even though the rain was blowing on us. On Thursday we didn’t do a lot. Some people played card games, most people took naps, it was more of a rest day. The upstairs girls dorm (which is my dorm), half of it got flooded in one corner and everywhere else, it was raining….inside. Again, all of my stuff was either under my tarp or in my air porter. That night, the host let us stay inside their house. They made tea for us and honestly, it was probably the best tea I have ever had! This morning, everyone woke up at normal time for morning devotions and it was finally not raining!!! Today has been only the second day this whole month that it has not rained! A lot of people were able to get laundry done and my team cleaned the pool, I also took a shower in the waterfall!

Before the storm hit, our host told us that we were on the safest part in the DR. We are far enough away from the ocean and we are on top of a mountain! Luckily, nothing here was damaged too bad, just a couple branches down! I am not positive what category of a storm it was when it hit us, but I do know that the winds got up to 66mph! Also, check out my weather report during the storm yesterday! It will be attached to my Facebook post about this blog!
