Haiti, Part 2… one blog simply would not suffice.

Fanuel
Fanuel is my brother, my bodyguard, my friend. 🙂  He was basically our day-to-day contact person.  As he does not speak much English and I am the only one on the team who speaks French, Fanuel and I got to know each other pretty well.  He brought us food and water each day and took us to Carnival and then to the beach on our day off.  He is definitely the adult that I got to know the most and an awesome example of the Christian community in Les Cayes, Haiti.

The School
While working at the orphanage, we would go to the school each morning and teach in the classrooms.  We taught the kids Christian songs as well as English words, phrases, numbers, etc.  Below is a picture of my favorite class.

The Hard Stuff
We were teaching in the mornings and sanding cement walls in the afternoons.  This is Steph dressed and ready to work.  We were helping the construction project to transform what used to be a boys dorm into a guest house for future visiting missionaries and guests.

Daily Living
A regular day for our team in Haiti consists of walking down to the well and filling up buckets of water to bring up the hill for water for flushing the toilet, cooking, washing dishes and clothes, showers, etc.  Often times, we would go down to the well and do team hairwashing there so that we would not have to carry water up the hill.

The Beach
While we were in Haiti, as a team, we had one opportunity to go to the locat beach on our day off.  For our second day off, Amanda and I wanted to go to the beach again and there was no vehicle available for the whole team, so Fanuel took us via motorcycle.  The photo doesn’t fully capture the essence of the experience.  I will just say I felt very close to them.
