“Go give them snacks”

“But it’s lunch time. I’m sure they’re already eating. They don’t need a snack.”

“Just go give them the snack bar.”

“Okay.”

I finished my Chick-fil-a, grabbed 5 gingerbread snack bars, and walked a couple blocks over to the construction workers down the road. They’ve been working on fixing the street for a while now so I knew they’d still be there. It only takes a minute to get there so I figured I’d pass them out and be on my merry way. Simple. Easy. I’ve got this.

I arrived to workers leaving (on their lunch break I’m assuming) and quickly got discouraged. What if everyone’s leaving and I don’t get to give these to anyone?

“Just go.”

“Okay.”

I stood on the corner and waited for one of the workers to come towards me. I didn’t want to be yelled at for going into a construction zone without any protection or whatever so I waited. And waited. And waited…

While some did leave, there were quite a few workers still working through the lunch hour. Surely, one of them saw the random girl in the cardigan and boots clearly not in her proper place. I assumed one of them might come and ask me why I was standing there watching them. Nope. Didn’t happen.

“Can I just go home now?”

“Why? You haven’t done what I want you to.”

“Well no one’s coming to me. I’m ready to give them the best snack bar in the world, but no one’s coming this way. How am I supposed to give it to them? I know there are workers just a couple more streets away that are building a house. I can just give these to them and we can all go home.”

“Well how do these workers know that you have something for them? They haven’t a clue. You need to go up to them and tell them.”

That’s when the scripture came to mind. You know, one of the ones that most missionaries quote when referring to the great commission? Romans 10:14.

But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?

While I had a plan in mind of how I wanted things to go, it wasn’t exactly what God wanted. I want things easy. I want a big return on a small investment. I don’t want to be uncomfortable, but God knows it’s exactly what I need.

So I went up to the closest worker (yes, I did pass the construction barrier. Gasp!) and handed him the gingerbread snack bars to pass to others.

I had to say yes to one thing in order for God to show me the real reason for doing it. The good thing about God is that we don’t have to do it all. We do our part and He’ll take care of the rest. I’m going on the other side of the world to do what God has told me. There will be a bunch of small yeses along the way and who knows where that’ll lead. I could share the Gospel with one person who in turn becomes a pastor or maybe show the love of Jesus to someone that will give his or her life to him. I don’t know and frankly, I’m okay with that. God uses every situation and every circumstance to point people back to Him so I know He can do a lot with my little yes.

Today, I thought I was just feeding the (not so) hungry, but God knew I needed to be reminded of what I’m supposed to do. I’m not meant to change the world, but simply say yes and let God take it from there.
