This month has been super crazy — different ministries + contact communication issues + mini-vacation to Austria and Hungary + preparing for the end of the World Race + life in general = a verrry interesting month for us. Here are a few highlights:

  • We met some AMAZING Americans here — I could never thank Dawn, Karen, Scott + Carolyn, Dwight + Melissa enough for all of their love & kindness shown to us this month.

  • During our day program, I did the missionary talk twice. The first time, a kid asked me what my zodiac sign was. The second time, I was told that I look like Lady Gaga…apparently I am not the best missionary?

  • Some Romanians, like my former teammate, Sarah, need cue cards when they talk … they should read “Not angry, just passionate!”

  • It’s not uncommon for any of my teammates + me to walk 4 miles [round trip] to get ice cream from McDonald’s.

  • I LOVE Romanian history!

  • Romania has Dr. Pepper!

  • The croissant was invented in Romania.

  • The mention of taco salad [and the fact that I ate it twice this month] made me cry — tears of joy, of course.

  • The World Race is really almost over…

  • One of our many bathrooms became a hiding place / skype room for our team. We were shameless.

  • Apparently the weather is just as pregnant as I am. July 1st was the coldest day  I have experienced since winter ’10, and the rest of the month I have sweat like crazy.

  • Oil-based paint does NOT come off hands easily. I didn't realize this until AFTER I attempted to clean my paint brush — which actually painted both of my hands blue. While thinking out loud saying, "I'm an idiot," our Romanian grandma smiled, shook her head, and said, "America, America…"

  • Our Romanian grandpa is one of the cutest men in the world.

  • A weekend get-away to Austria & Hungary is definitely possible. 🙂

  • While setting up a camp one day, I felt completely at home… I miss Prairie States!

  • I absolutely love when a child speaks to me in his/her language & I cannot understand a word he/she is saying. & I just smile &  nod as if I am taking in every single word…

  • As pretty as the Romanian language is, I found myself missing the sound of Russian.

  • 7 Romanian children singing praise & worship songs on the way to a village “mission trip” is one of the most beautiful things I have experienced this year.

  • Eastern Europe has emus! — well, at their zoos, at least.

  • Speaking of zoos … animals such as goats, house cats, and guinea pigs are featured at the one in Timisoara.

  • The hills are alive…..with the sound of music. + Vienna, Austria is pretty amazing. + the apple strudel is phenomenal.

  • Budapest is also a wonderful city. + Carmen, Bethany, & I went to a classical music [stringed instruments] concert while there. Sooo cool.

  • Barbeques are amazing
