I couldn’t help but notice his shoes.

I looked up from my phone which I was budgeting on, to the man with holes in his sneakers. He was holding palm tree husk and a beautiful heart made from the husk. He gave it to me with such a bright smile and kept saying, “free free free.”

Why would he just give it to me?

He then started to make each squad member flowers(for the girls) and grasshoppers(for the boys), with such a giving heart. After handing out his incredible creations, we asked if we could pray for him. I immediately felt God tugging on my heart to go back into the store and show him the love of Jesus. This stranger had nothing, yet he gave me a gift and expected nothing in return. I came back with a bag and tried so hard to hold back tears because not even ten minutes ago I was so concerned about the money I was spending on myself. On snacks and activities, on things that was to please myself, when I am not here for myself. That was such a moment of realization.

He needed it.

I absolutely did not. He shared his story about how his family has passed and he’s been all alone. How he knows Jesus exists, but he’s not sure how to get back to the place he once was with Him. We learned he couldn’t read and he was told untrue things from a church. It broke our hearts.

But in that moment God showed me why I was here. If I can have even just an impact on one person, if I can show one person Jesus, then I am doing what God has sent me here to do. I got the opportunity to touch this man who needed love. We asked him if next Sunday he would go to church with us and we would come and pick him up right here. I know for this man, this is just the beginning.

So that’s the reason why I’m here.

“What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” – Luke 3:10-11
