God never ceases to surprise me. A few days ago I went on a day-hike into the mountains of Thailand. Little did I know, this day would be filled with spontaneous adventures.

The Drive

The journey began at our hostel, when three women on my squad and myself got into our grab (A grab is similar to an Uber, or a taxi).

We piled into this shiny new Mitsubishi car. The driver suddenly realized where we were going, and told us that he couldn’t go there.

It’s too far.” He said.

He then used hand motions and broken English, to tell us that the mountain roads are windy and steep. He mentioned that we should get a truck because a car couldn’t make it.

So we got out of the car and immediately ordered another grab. A few minutes later another car pulled up. This guy seemed to be a little more confident in his driving skills. So the four of us, piled in a tiny Asian car, were headed into the mountains!

About 30-45 minutes into the drive a man stopped us. He seemed to be suggesting that our driver go no further in this car, but after some slight persuasion we continued on.

The roads began to narrow, and steepen. It was a little darker now too, due to the tall mountain trees creating a shelter for the road below. We continued on. We dodged other drivers on this one-way mountain road, and even passed a sign with pictures indicating that cars are not recommended. After a few minutes of laughing at our driver’s reactions, we arrived at our destination.

The Hike

Our adventurous spirits were already awakened by the eventful drive. We were full of excitement as we began our hike. The cool air forced its way through the trees and onto my skin. The fresh smell of pine and mountain air rehabilitated my airways. The peaceful sound of wind in the trees, and birds in the distance was a pleasant white noise to my unrested soul. It was absolutely refreshing to be out in nature again. Away from the chaos of the world. I was home again, back in the wild.

After swinging on vines, having refreshingly fun conversation, and enjoying the incredible views our hike came to an end. We had arrived at this small mountain village in high hopes that we could enjoy some delicious coffee.

The Village

Our hike led us to a small village. We strolled in a bit tired from the journey. We were ready to reward ourselves with a small lunch and village coffee. As we were deciding where to get coffee we noticed a cross.

We quickly recognized this mountain hut as a church, and that people were worshiping in that church. We followed a sign that proved it to be a Christian Church.

I felt at home as we took off our shoes, adding to the pile of sandals next to the door. We sat and listened. We couldn’t understand a word, but we soon realized that they were about to take communion!

It was the most beautiful experience remembering Jesus with my Thai brothers and sisters in Christ. Afterwards we were invited onto the small stage for a church group picture. They had a true Christ-like gift of hospitality. They made us feel so welcomed. After the small photo shoot we were greeted with smiles, hugs, and a joyful lunch invitation.

Did I mention they didn’t speak a word of English?

The Lunch (Breaking Bread)

We walked up the rocky stairway surrounded by lush greenery, and down the road into a beautiful mountain home. The church members guided us up to a loft, with a pleasant mountain view. The meal was authentic and delicious. Different soups, fresh fruits and vegetables, and refreshing green tea left us full as we sat in complete amazement. After lunch we used Google Translate, to ensure the pastor understood our appreciation. He offered us a free ride back down the mountain. This was a huge blessing.

Our only other option back down was to hitchhike.

Once again God showed his beauty through what was planned to be a simple adventure. He reminded us that He is everywhere, that even in the mountains of Thailand you can find refuge. God never ceases to surprise me. I left that village tremendously encouraged. It was refreshing to know that the Gospel has been spread this far. So far that even village people in the mountains of Thailand are doing church right. These people knew the Gospel, and they had the Holy Spirit. These people, before they even knew we were Christians, showed us the love of Jesus Christ. While they couldn’t use their words, they spoke louder through their actions.

How will you show people the love of Jesus Christ today?
