Have you been struggling to be the person you want to be?

Maybe it’s time for a new year’s resolution….

Everybody seems to think a new year’s resolution has something to do with January 1st. To a degree this is a convenient day for a new year’s resolution in that it is the first day of the calendar year. But there is such thing as a rolling year. A year is simply a unit of time. A new year is the time between now and 365 days from now.

So what is a new year’s resolution? It’s a person inside their heart and mind resolving that the past 365 days have not been ideal for the person I want to be, but that changes today because I’ve resolved in my heart that the next 365 days are going to be different in _____  category of my life. This isn’t a new week resolution. Meaning I’m not resolving something in my heart that is going to last a week. It’s a new year’s resolution. This resolution is something I want so bad that I have resolved in my heart to chase after this / be this for the entire year!

Maybe it’s time for a new year’s resolution. I encourage you to seek the Lord and ask Him what yours should be.

Should you resolve to stop being a Pharisee toward yourself while showing grace to others? Should you resolve to be the husband or wife that you know you truly are and can be? Should you resolve to lay down the tobacco, drugs or alcohol because in your heart of hearts you know freedom is more fulfilling than bondage? Should you resolve to stop letting important things in life matter more than the most important One in life and make a commitment to seek Jesus with everything you have? Maybe you are on a good path and you simply resolve to not allow anything to get you off course but to keep a single focus. These are examples but it could be anything. Whatever the Lord tells you. Nothing is too big or too small if it’s Spirit led!

What is your new year’s resolution? Mine personally is to be free from the ups and downs of life. To stop allowing circumstances to dictate my state of being. To allow the gospel to determine my state of being regardless of what I’m facing.

Remember, every new year’s resolution needs an action plan. For example, mine will be learn to walk strictly by the Spirit through practice of spending time in the secret place with God in His word and in prayer and through fasting. So when you figure out your resolution, ask God how to make it reality. And never forget that while practical steps are crucial, grace empowers you to consistently embrace those practical steps. You can’t do it on your own. You need His grace. And I’ve got good news. It’s FREE! Yay God!
