Who Is Jesus?
Last night I was challenged with this question as I sat through a message at Crew, a ministry I have attended since September for young adults ages 22-35 who want to see a movement for Christ in this young demographic which the world so desperately needs. A ministry that has shown me what true community is and how important it really is to maturing in my faith and walk as a man of Christ. Proverbs 27:17 states “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
– but back to the question! Who is Jesus?!
-What a simple question right? – Answer – The Son of God
– As I sit here pondering this question, crunching on some delicious Honey Nut Cheerios(actually Honey Nut Spins – WalMart brand – DELICIOUS) I come to think that I can’t even put into words who he is. I can’t explain who he is in just one little phrase, as ‘The Son of God’ – well not a little phrase, yes God coming to Earth in the form of man is VERY important to understand but there is SO much beneath that.
-“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” -John 14:6
– He is THE ONLY way to God, not all Rivers run to the same ocean. ONE way. Through Him.
-He is the definition of Love. He is the only reason I can be seen as righteous to the father. He is my redeemer. My healer. My sacrifice. My Creator. My bestfriend. My reason for living. The reason I AM living. My buddy to whom I can pour out my whole heart to. My counselor. My Guide. My example. My mentor. My forgiver. He is the definition of Grace. The perfect example of what I am not. As Galatians 5:22 explains the fruit of the spirit, it is what he is. “[my] love, [my] joy,[my] peace, [my]patience, [my]kindness, [my] goodness, [my] faithfulness, [my] gentleness, and [my]self-control.” If any of that is seen in me, it is HE who gives that to me. He is my Authority. He is my Boss. I am HIS and he is Mine. He is nurturing. He is who gives Abundant life. He is THE giver of life. My supplier. My heart. He is the Bread of life – “…man does not live on Bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Deut. 8:3. He is OBEDIENCE. He is the Light. He is the TRUTH.
-I look back on what/who my heart describes Jesus as. And the main question is, if Jesus is ALL of these things and MORE, why is my life not COMPLETELY surrendered to him? Either Jesus is who he says he is or he is a complete QUACK. If you believe he is all these things, is your life reflecting that? Is MY life reflecting that? I can answer that question with complete honesty, no my life is not reflecting that. I need to surrender my heart and whole life to him, I’m attempting to but just not there. I read this morning in Matthew 5:48 “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Some things we need to realize, one is that in THIS life, we will NEVER be perfect. But we can always strive to be more like Christ. 1 John 3:2-3 states “Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.” Those who strive to become perfect will one day be perfect, even as Christ is perfect.
