Setting off paper lanterns on New Year’s Eve. Felt like I was part of Tangled!

The temple was breathtaking in its physical beauty but you could feel an uneasy, dark undercurrent. It lurked in the dark corners, behind the statues in some of the rooms – shadows cast by evil spirits. The spirit of deception was heavy on the people here. They care so much about the outside of things, bedecking it in gold and jewels and carved wood. But what is it hiding?

Another form of exploitation in order to survive… Poor families dress up their young daughters/grand-daughters in traditional finery and send them to stand on the steps of the temple. There, the girls pose for photos with tourists and request money.
