Sorority. That
word has a bad connotation to it- like a bunch of crazy college girls living
together.
But this month, in the sunny capitol of El Salvador, there
are a group of crazy Jesus loving girls living together.
This month our team of six girls is living in the home of
our ministry contact, Cindy. Cindy
is 20 and lives in this house in San Salvador with her brother and his
wife. This month, she also lives
with Suzy and Jenny, who are two other young girls who help orchestrate the
ministry here. Then there are Bea
and Amy, two other Salvadoran girls who don’t live here but help out and work
with us.
So that’s our group. Eleven girls in El Salvador. Awesome!
We do have specific ministries. We do (and I’ll write more about them soon!). We visit a
brain paralysis center twice a week to hang out with the kids/adults
there. We go to church services,
evangelize on the streets, perform skits and songs for youth, and on our first
day we visited a school. That day
Alys and Stacy gave them short bits of their testimonies about what they had
discovered about God’s character, and that was pretty cool.
But besides the regular ministries, I feel that a big ministry
this month will be to one another.
In World Race culture we use this term called “pouring into one another,
and I think that’s really happening here.
Every day, really amazing conversations just happen. I’ve learned so much from my teammates,
and I really feel as if they are consistently pouring into me. I’ve had in depth conversations with
Alys- this lady has such an amazing way of looking at things that I never saw
before. Stacy and I have talked
about dreams and how God communicates with us, and Amy and I have encouraged
and comforted one another when we are feeling down.
Another World Race term is to “do life together. This month we are really getting to
know one another. I don’t live
terribly differently here than I did when I was in college. It’s like getting to know a whole group
of girls all over again, but this time instead of a university bringing us
together, it’s Jesus. All eleven
of us live together, cook together, work out together, talk about scripture,
talk about dreams, talk about what we are feeling and what God is showing us. We conquer things, overcome fears, and
sometimes we break down. But it is
so, so good.
One day after a particularly brain stimulating conversation
with Alys, I flopped on the pink-sheeted double bed we share and started
journaling. One of the things I
wrote was, “There’s nowhere else in the world that I’d rather be right now. And it was true.
Right now God has me living in a beautiful house with beautiful
woman, soaking in the El Salvadoran sunshine, learning about Him and His
character.
And that’s exactly where I’m supposed to be.
