So on Friday, we went back to the school. This time, we got the opportunity to attempt to teach them a little English. Stacey (who was an elementary school teacher for a year before the Race) and Rachel taught one group, and Jake and I (neither one of us whom have ever been elementary school teachers) taught the other group. Needless to say, Jake and I had a little trouble holding their attention, but it seemed to be at least somewhat successful. Through the use of a translator, we taught them the alphabet, sang “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” attempted to teach them sports and animals through the drawing pictures, taught them a little U.S. geography, and taught them a few phrases, such as “Good morning,” “Good afternoon,” and of course, “What’s up?”
After we got done teaching them English, music started playing very loudly, and it was dance party time. We danced with the kids for a couple hours, which was a lot of fun. The kids seemed to truly enjoy it, even though they only played the same four songs over and over again, three of which seemed just to be variations of each other. There was one kid who we nicknamed “Lil’ Usher.” He knew every single word to “We are the People” and gave an amazing performance of it. Luckily, I had my camera with me and shot a couple short videos. All in all, it was definitely a fun day of ministry with the kids.
