It has been a long time since we wrote an update on our blog page and we do apologize for that. God has been moving in miraculous ways in our lives and it has been a crazy, but amazing rollercoaster ride. If you have been following us you know that we are 64% of the way fully funded and that all last week we were at Training Camp in Georgia.
“How was training camp?” That’s the question many people have asked the last couple days, which is a fair question to ask, but kind of hard to answer. Training camp was amazing, exhausting, fun, exciting, and emotional all at once. So I am going to do my best to invite you into 5 of the things I learned at Training camp.
1. It’s Okay to Cry.
I have always been a stuffer and have held a lot deep in my soul from my past and never really processed them. Everyone needs the time to grieve but not everyone knows how to grieve correctly. I used to not show emotions because I thought men are supposed to be tough and we never cry because that shows weakness. Let me just say this, Real Men and Sons of God cry. Its okay to cry and it is a important part of grieving.
2. Less is Better.
Over the last 11 days our food portions were smaller than I have ever eaten and surprisingly there was only one day I ever felt really hungry. I also averaged only 4-5 hours of sleep each night, but after the third day I barely noticed the lack of sleep. We were challenged during training camp to turn off all electronics. I took this challenge very seriously and it was the best decision. I was able to focus and see God in a whole new light and because of getting ride of that distraction I have never felt closer to God than I do now.
3. Families and Trust.
After route 2 was cancelled Katie and I had to move to route 4. We found ourselves with strangers we have never met or even talked to and in two weeks we would be at training camp with them. 54 introductions later U squad is the only squad I could see myself in. Trusting has been a big lesson for Katie and me. We truly feel at home with U squad. With only 8 guys and 46 girls I see each one as my brother and sister in Christ. God also surprised us when we were told who was going to be on our team. Kind of confused with his decision I now feel it was the right decision. It’s so funny how much God knows and will take care of you if you will just let go of control and trust in him. Team Wildfire! Hebrews 12:28,29.
4. Be Open.
One of the best lessons I learned from training camp is to be open to whatever God has planned for you. Each day I asked God, “Father open my heart and eyes for the people you place in front of me. Help me see them as you see them, love them as you love them, and serve them as you serve them.” Don’t be afraid of trying new things and doing things that would place you out of your comfort zone. I also learned the power of prayer. Prayer is something I have taken for granted for a long time, but it is powerful and it’s how the Holy Spirit empowers us as sons and daughters.
5. There is a Fire in All of Us.
One the guys on our team, Jace, said something I really thought was funny but it’s true. The Holy Spirit creates a hunger or lights a fire in your hearts to run after Jesus. As Jace put it, “It makes your little Spirit Man stand up inside you.” God is calling all of us to do something amazing and wants to show you how amazing following him can be. We often ignore this calling by drowning ourselves in social media, work, and other life things. The funny thing is that loving God and following him is simple, it really is. There is no secret to it. All you have to do is wake up and say, “Yes” to God. Ask him, “Father show me the things you have for your kingdom…” and don’t be afraid to listen to your “Little Spirit Man” inside you.
I can’t tell you all how excited I am because works can’t express the emotions I am feeling inside me. I am saying, “Yes” to God and I challenge everyone who reads this that they too would say “Yes” to God too.
Below are two pictures, one is of my team, and the team Katie and I will be living with for the next year. I ask would you please pray for us that God would work in our hearts and challenge us to do something amazing for his glory. The second picture is of our squad leaders and mentors who will be teaching us and supporting us while we are in the field. Would you also please pray for them and their hearts that God will keep them strong and blessed through this next year many of them are giving up a lot to invest in us and our relationship with God.
