So many events have happened since my last blog! We traveled from Atlanta Airport to Johannesburg South AFrica. That was a long 13 hr flight but not as long as the bus ride from Jo-burg to Cape Town which was 19 hrs! But my team and I made it just fine, and with no mishaps. We met our contact at the bus station. Pastor Ivan and his wife picked us up in their cars.
Since then we have helped them with their ministry. Their church is called Revelation Ministries and you can visit their website at Revelationministries.co.za or Ivan Jone’s Facebook page to keep up with what the team is doing here in Cape Town.
We have been working with Ivan and Bronwyn, some mornings we help feed the neighborhood by dishing out porridge to anyone who needs a meal. Mostly younger children show up, but even some adults will stop to get a bowl. The kids stick around afterwards and play with us. But we made the fatal mistake of giving them piggy back rides day now. Now if they see us they jump on our backs like monkeys. Sometimes even jumping from back to back.
Thursday afternoons we help with the after school program at Ivan’s church. His church is located at the Lavander Hill High school. He was given some land at the beginning of his ministry 8 years ago. The theme for the after school program is athletics. A week ago, we did relay races and three-legged races along with wheel barrow and other fun races. The kids and my teammates had a blast.
This last Thursday my teammates and I had to do everything. And for our first time we had trouble keeping the kids in line and paying attention. We tried teaching them a new game and it just ended up with everyone tackling me because they say I look like Jackie Chan.
Friday mornings we have been visiting the old person home. The men and women are a hoot and a half. After we sang happy birthday to Sarah, my teammate. One of the gentleman blessed all of us and said that we were an encouragement to them because we took the time to visit with them.
One of the examples he said to us, was how as soon as church service was over everyone dispersed so quickly and all he wanted was to visit with the younger generation. As a I was sitting there listening I realized that he had so much wisdom and that I should be looking for men and women with just as much wisdom in my church. It doesn’t have to be every Sunday but just once in awhile I should take the time to have a conversation with some of the older generation in my church.
I am so excited to see what else God can teach me!
