I know that speaking for myself I love being “busy.” Until recently I have always had to be doing something, I could not just sit still and do nothing. I remember my dad would always tell me “sometimes not doing anything is okay” but back then I always thought WHAT ARE YOU CRAZY!! Recently though, I have realized that rest is good, rest is needed.

Exodus 20: 8-10 — “And he said, “my presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest”

Mark 6:31 — “Then, because so many people were  coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat. He said to them “come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Rest looks different for everyone, but for me this is what I believe. For me, “to rest” means to sit down by myself, whether it’s for an hour or longer, and spend time with God. Whether that is sitting there and praying, or if its through worshiping in songs, reading the bible, or journaling or better yet, all of those. Right below you will see what the definition for rest it.

rest1

verb

1.

cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength

Funny right? Rest means to stay still and not move, to be refreshed, and to gain back strength. Well when you FIND REST IN GOD through him you will find refreshment, through him you will find strength, through him you will feel renewed. God is our strength and when we find rest in him, we are regaining strength. God renews us and makes us new and whole again, and when we find rest in him we are renewing and replenishing our hearts and minds through him.

Sometimes you feel like when you are so exhausted you just need to sleep to gain that rest you are longing for, but I encourage you next time you need rest, to go find a quiet place by yourself and spend time with the Lord. However that looks for you, it doesn’t have to be all day, but take some time to yourself, read the bible, pray, worship, journal, speak to God, surrender yourself to him and devote time to him, and I tell you now, you will feel refreshed and you will regain strength!
