We’ve all heard the famous golden rule, “treat others as you would like to be treated”. But of course its not as simple as all that, and yet the Bible also says,

“To you who are ready for the truth, I say this: Love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer for that person. If someone slaps you in the face, stand there and take it. If someone grabs your shirt, giftwrap your best coat and make a present of it. If someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously.” Luke 6:27-30

So in this life, this race we are all running how will we ever achieve victory if we are expected to help those we hate? How do we win the race if we are looking out for others instead of ourselves?

If NASCAR driver Tony Stewart wants to win a race do you think he would let other cars pass him to gain the advantage? Would Dale Earnhardt Jr. allow his pit crew to lend a helping hand to Jeff Gordon? Of course not! So why should our lives be so different than such a race?

We all want to live victorious lives, but again, how we achieve that victory is what sets us apart from one another. When we repay good for evil we learn how to run towards a different prize. The story of David and King Saul is such a great example of this.

Soon after David killed Goliath it was made clear through Samuel that David would soon replace Saul as king of Israel. Angered by this, King Saul was determined to kill David before he could take the throne. But when David had the chance to kill Saul, and become king he spared his life instead.

“And Saul said to David, “You are a better man than I am, for you have repaid me good for evil. Yes, you have been amazingly kind to me today, for when the Lord put me in a place where you could have killed me, you didn’t do it. Who else would let his enemy get away when he had him in his power? May the Lord reward you well for the kindness you have shown me today.” 1 Samuel 24:17-19

So David was awarded the crown, not by selfish force, but for his kindness.
How will you achieve your victory today, by evil or by good?

“Do your best, prepare for the worst – then trust God to bring victory.” Prov. 21:31
