Now, don’t let the title mislead you. I don’t think I’m boring, I just hope that I have waaay more interesting things to tell you once I get on the Race. But for now, I’d like to help you get to know me a little bit better. First, some fun facts:
1. The volume on the radio in my truck (or whatever car I’m in) HAS to be turned to an even number. Turning it up to 11? Uh uh, we’re doing either 10 or 12. Weird, yes, but it’s the way it has to be.
2. I can do the worm with my eyebrows. I figured this out in 6th grade, which, obviously, made me the coolest kid in my class for like 2 class periods. I’ll be happy to show you, just ask.
3. I have a fake twin brother named Branden Stilwell. We met freshman year of high school and have been best friends ever since. Well, that’s not true…I don’t like him at first (way too immature for me), but I figured that since we looked exactly alike (skinny, dark complexion, curly afro), then I had no choice to be friends with him. But I like him now.
4. I’m going to be 24 on February 10, but I often get mistaken for an 18-20 year old. Numerous times, someone has asked me, “What are you up to?”, to which I answer, “Oh, I just graduated and now I’m working.” They then ask, “Why did you choose to work instead of going to college?”, and I reply, “…I graduated from college.” “Oh.” “…yeah.”
5. I have an older sister (Joy, two years older) who was my best friend up until I was about 10. She also didn’t let me answer a question until I was almost 5, so she’s a bit bossy, but I still love her. I have a younger sister (Abbie, 6 years younger) who is now currently a best friend. She has a zillion family nicknames (Abbers, Abber Snaps, Abber Lou, Snaps, Abs, Abigail Mae Mae Mae Mae Mae Mason, etc.). We call her by all of those nicknames so much that her friends have started to do the same.
6. I have two wonderful parents, Don and Deana. Both are world travelers, so they’re dealing with me going on the Race pretty well. My mom was on a mission trip to Zambia in college, and while on a safari, decided to let her entire group go ahead and just take a nap amongst all the deadly wild animals. She’s tough. My dad, when he was 10, flew around the world with his two older brothers. So, compared to them, the Race is nothing.
In short, my family is awesome, my friends are life-changers (I’ll tell you more about them later. Come back for it!) and I’m completely jacked to go on the Race. I have done nothing to deserve anything, but the good things keep rolling in (ALL glory to God). God has opened my eyes to not only my sin/brokenness/general badness, but also to the sin/brokenness/general badness of the world, a world that He created, in which BILLIONS of people whom He loves have never heard His name, His story, or what He did for all of us 2000 years ago. Certainly, I will miss the comforts of home, playing basketball, riding my motorcycle, watching Scrubs and Psych (best. tv. shows. ever.), and I will miss my friends and family. But I don’t want to miss changing the world in His name. I don’t want to miss my purpose, and I don’t want to miss Him.
My name is Reid Mason, and I am a Son of the Most High God.
