In preparation for launch, I have decided that as I do my research on the countries I will be traveling to, I want you all to learn about them too! I am going to do them by region to make it easier for y’all.

So, lastly is South America! While in South America, I will be going to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

So, next up for South America is Peru!

MAP OF PERU

 Summary

  • From the breathtaking Andes Mountains and vast coastal deserts to the lush, tropical rainforests of the Amazon Jungle, Peru is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth.

  • The birthplace of several proud, ancient civilizations, present-day Peru is home to multiple indigenous groups who blend into a unique and beautiful culture.

  • Sadly, the people of Peru struggle with extreme poverty and class inequality. Government corruption hinders economic development, and many people face problems like teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and crime.

Area

  • 1,285,216 sq km (Peru is about 2 times larger than Texas!)

Culture

  • The Peruvian concept of time is fairly relaxed; however, international visitors, to whom punctuality is more important, are expected to be on time for appointments.

  • Men and women shake hands on greeting. Good friends may embrace or kiss. Women may kiss on either cheek.

  • Conversational space is closer than in other countries. Do not back away, as this might offend the speaker. Often members of the same sex will rest a hand on each other’s arm during a conversation.

What I am going to do there?

  • I will be partnering with Calvary Chapel Cusco and the sweetest hosts ever! We will be helping at a girls’ home, working around the church, going into the local schools, and hosting VBS in the outlying mountain communities.

Climate

  • In Peru, a country located just south of the Equator, there are three climate zones:
    – a desert coastal strip (called la Costa), with a mild climate, cloudy and foggy in winter and pleasantly warm in summer;
    – the Andean zone (la Sierra), more or less cold depending on altitude;
    – finally, the large eastern area covered by the Amazonian forest (la Selva), with a hot and humid climate throughout the year.

Language

  • The official language of Peru is Spanish.

Fun Facts

  • There are over 3,000 different varieties of potatoes in Peru.
  • The largest flying bird on Earth can be found in Peru, The Giant Andean Condor.
  • There are 90 different micro-climates in Peru.
  • There are 10 million alpacas in the world, and three-quarters of them live in Peru.
  • Forget the Sahara Desert, Peru actually has the highest sand dune in the World!

Is it safe?

  • Oh yeah!
