Intention
Does it matter? Specifically in accordance with words.
“’For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.’” Isaiah? ?55:10-11? ?ESV??
God says that His word will accomplish the purpose for which it is sent.
Intent.
What does that mean exactly? Does that mean that the exact words that God speaks will happen or the intent behind His words are what will to come to pass?
I am made in His image. Does this also mean that the intention behind my words also matters with the things that I speak?
At home Micah, my younger brother, and I have a pretty sweet relationship. There’s been many times that I’ve said, “Micah, I’m hungry. I need food,” in a whiny voice with the intent of him solving the problem and providing me with food. Though, with my words I never actually ask him. Yet, my intent is met (because he’s awesome and loves me. #coolestlilbroever).
The same goes for everything I say.
“We should probably get going.” But, I don’t intend on giving that push I just want someone else to.
Sarcastic comments or saying “I’m just kidding” when really I’m not. I just don’t want to offend.
The numerous times I’ve said something just to be noticed even if I didn’t agree with what I was saying.
And the listing could go on and on.*
The Bible gives many verses on holding your tongue and being wise with your words.
I think intention matters.
What do you think?
My intent of the blog is to start a conversation. I want to hear opinions. This is something I’ve mulled over for awhile. Lately it’s been more focused on my intent behind my speech but a big point I grazed over here is about the intent of God’s words and what that means. This blog is pretty one sided. It all comes from my head.. I would love some thoughts, opinions, questions, whatever. You’re invited in. You’re wanted here.
* I know I’m pointing out the “bad” intents but there are plenty of good intents as well.
