This was my first attempt at making a video, and I had a lot of computer problems in the process,
so it took me a bit longer.–
Where were you? Harbin, China
How did you get there? 14-hour flight from Atlanta to Seoul, 2-hour flight from Seoul to Beijing, overnight at hostel in Beijing, 19-hour train ride from Beijing to Harbin.
What did you do there? We worked with a ministry who’s been planting churches in the area, working with door-to-door ministry, college ministry, getting contacts, telling them about the gospel and connecting them to a church in their area.
Accommodations? I lived in an apartment with two other girls on my team. We had one bed, a kitchenette area, and a full bathroom with a western toilet and shower.
Currency? Yuan. $1 = 6.2 ¥
Anything you miss from America? I miss being able to flush toilet paper…
What was the best moment? Singing karaoke with a group of new Chinese friends and making a fool of ourselves.
What was the hardest moment? Visiting a Buddhist temple full of people praying, bowing, and burning incense to various gods. There were also a TON of beggars outside the temple, all with physical, mental, and spiritual decay.
Top 3 foods? Fried duck on a stick from a street vendor. Gong bao rou. Spicy potato strings.
Bottom 3 foods? Chicken giblets. Fish scales (was told they were like chips… wrong.) Cow lung, I didn’t mean to order it, but the smell was so bad I didn’t even try it.
Language(s) spoken/learned? I tried very hard to learn Chinese, but I can never seem to retain anything more than basic pleasantries. We had translators with us wherever we went.
Biggest time you saw God show up? We were able to meet with a group of 15+ people at a University to hold a Bible Study, explain the Gospel, and answer their questions. There was a ton of spiritual warfare going on in that room, but God completely flooded the room with his presence and the enemy had no foothold there.
Anything else? I can’t believe my time in China is over. I met some amazing people, with awesome American names. Some of my favorite names: Happy, Winter, Under, Echo, and Hyacinth. It seems like we just got here and yet at the same time it seems like I’ve been here forever. I love this place, and don’t want to leave… but I’ll probably say that about every ministry 🙂
