We all know the 5 senses: sound, smell, taste, touch, and sight. If you’re a nerd like me, you know that there are many more than 5 senses, proprioception being one example, but we’ll just stick to the basics.

Now, I’m sure you know what all these senses do. Sound lets you hear things, smell lets you smell things, taste lets you taste things, touch lets you feel things, and sight lets you see things.

But something I’ve begun to learn on the race is how much more we could be using our 5 senses.

Sound: listening to music is great, but if you’re not listening for the voice of God to direct your steps, then you’re misusing your sense of sound.

Smell: smells are known to be linked with memories far more than any other sense, if you’re not using your “smelling” to remember all that God has done for you and the promises He’s made you, then you’re misusing your sense of smell.

Taste: if you remember to eat breakfast but forget to “taste and see that the Lord is good”, then you’re misusing your sense of taste.

Touch: the sense of touch is often taken for granted, you could feel a thousand different textures, but if you’re not touching the lives of those around you, then you’re misusing your sense of touch.

Sight: this one has been the biggest lesson for me on the race. You could see the whole world, but if you lack a vision for God to do something with your life, a plan for the future, then you’re misusing your sense of sight.

If you really use all 5 of your senses, you’ll experience God in a whole new way. This is something I have just started doing, and I am excited to see how God continues to reveal to me his voice, his promises, his goodness, and his plan for those around me and my future.

How many senses are you using?
