Okay, so I’ve heard this verse probably a million times, but wanted to share it and a little story with you.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.'” (Jeremiah 29:11)
I’ve always loved this verse and the assurance that it gives, that God really does have everything under His control. He’s got it all worked out, and there’s nothing for me to worry about, ever.
I grew up going to Christian camp for a week out of every summer, and since then it has always been my desire to work at a camp in some capacity. So a couple years ago I applied to the camp that I was familiar with as a counselor, didn’t get the job, and ended up finding AIM’s website and going to Jamaica on a Real Life team. (that’s the incredibly short version…if you want more, just ask!)
Last summer I did the same thing – applied to the same camp again, and didn’t get hired. Instead, I had an entire summer to get to know my adopted siblings and really ended up having an amazing time with them.
After I switched from the June team to the September team, one thing kept coming back in to my mind: get a summer camp job. I looked online for a while, but nothing was really standing out to me (I think I even made that comment to one of my brothers once, and he told me I had to go out looking for opportunities, that they weren’t going to jump out at me). Then I just quit looking – I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be actively seeking something, and that if a position was going to open up God would bring it to my attention.
At training camp I got talking to one of my teammates that is also from Michigan, and the topic of summer camps came up. She suggested I apply at SpringHill because she worked there last summer and knew they had a hard time filling their health officer position (great for me – I’ll be a nurse in a couple weeks!). So I sent in an inquiry and didn’t hear back from them. I did get an email from another camp, though, Grace Adventures, about a potential health officer position…and after turning in the application and undergoing a phone interview, was officially offered the position today!
Who said God doesn’t have things planned out perfectly? I’ve definitely learned to depend on His timing!
