Haiti 2012

It’s hard to believe that the month in Haiti is coming to an end.  I leave on Sunday for Romania.  The time here has been challenging, but at the same time growing.  Although this month has been hard, I am not ready to leave yet.  I feel there is still so much to learn from the culture and relationships to build.  I am sad to leave Grande Guave, yet excited of what is ahead. Nothing about this month has been ideal.  From the living conditions to the ministry.  But God didn’t call me to this trip to live the ideal life or to be comfortable.  This has been nothing expected, yet it’s through the unexpected and the un-ideal that God’s love is revealed to me.  I want to share some of my experiences from the month spent in Haiti from what I did to what I have learned.

Ministry: Construction

Construction – the testing of physical strength… the un-ideal ministry.  But a ministry that deepen my prayer life to get through the day.  It was hard to see God’s purpose in all this concrete.   Yet through all the work from 8 to 4 each day, the verse that kept coming to my mind was… “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  Eph 2:10.  God had prepared me to do this work, God place me in Haiti to pour concrete, God knew the pain and frustration I would go through… Yet God knew the spiritual renewal that would happen and the self-discovery through it all.  We have to prepare the fields before any seeds can be planted.

Ministry: Painting a Mural

On the very last ministry, I was given the opportunity to paint a mural at the beach house.  In fact, several artistic people on the squad had the opportunity to help.  There was about 8 people working and painting.  A mural was painted in the kitchen of a mango tree, the girls’ dorm has a mural of flowers/swirls, and the boys’ dorm has a sandal/foot with the world.  All designed by different people and all looking very different.  But I love that!… I was in charge of the girls’ dorm… So I drew out  a design, then free-handed it on the wall and painted it.  It turned out beautiful and I am thankful for the opportunity.  Soooo much fun!
