Literally. One of the pictures that stands out in my mind from this week was seeing a blind person with a cane leading another blind person to dinner one night.
This month my team is in Durban, South Africa. We are working with a camp called Higher Grounds. It's an organization that runs camps for youth and adults with different disabilities. Every camp looks different because each is specific to a disability. The month is broken down into three parts/camps.
Week One: Youth Camp for youth who are blind or partially sighted
Week Two: Adult Holiday Camp for acquired brain injuries (stoke or accident victims)
Week Three: Youth/Adult Camp for people with autism, down syndrome, and MR
Each week we move to a new location, as this organization is based out of Durban, but does not have a permanent camp location. The first and last week we are in the mountains. And the second week, we are at a beach resort. I think my team is going to change names to Nomadic Pursuit, because in every country we seem to move locations. And based off knowledge, my team will be moving around in India also. Crazy exciting.
It can be challenging having to pack up and move each week. Never having a place to call home or settling in to. But at the same time you get to experience so much. Different people, different scenery, different places. I am excited for this month, and how each week will be different. We actually just finished with our first week at camp. And it was amazing. And God was at work here.
In fact, I know God showed up. I could feel His presence one morning after constant prayer. The verse that I prayed repeatedly was about where two or more are gathered You are there. And it worked. Prayer works! And God is active. It was the morning I spoke to the camp. You see I don't speak in front of large groups. In fact, I have yet to have spoken/preached on the World Race until now. But God was there. And God was at work that morning and each day.
Many of the youth come from different backgrounds; in fact many are not Christians. There were four girls and fifteen boys. Of that, one of the four girls and five of the fifteen boys were Albino. Three were completely blind and the rest were partially sighted. All the campers spoke both Zulu and English. 80% came from underprivileged homes. The majority of the campers are sponsored to come to camp. And this was the first time for them to be in an environment where God was brought up in conversations every single day.
What an incredible experience. An amazing week where God was at work!
*Sorry for lack of updates lately. We don't have Internet except once a week in town. And plus I have been at a loss of words with what to write. It’s been such a blessed month… I honestly can't put words to describe it.
**Prayer Requests: We move and travel about two hours away on Sunday. Pray for smooth transitions. Pray for next week. We are working with adults who have acquired brain injuries. Pray for open hearts. And… please start praying for my team as we prepare spiritually for India. Thanks! Love y'all!
