Have you ever wondered if the Lord is still active in the world today as He was back in the time of the apostles? I do. When I signed up for the World Race during the application process they told me I would probably encounter miracles as well as other miraculous works. At that point, I thought “cool!” but I didn’t actually think it would happen to me on my race. Things like this really don’t happen to me, as much as I wished they did. Well, a miracle did happened right in front of my eye…in the last place I would have looked for one.

On Wednesday (October 28), the ministry we helped out with that day was taking a meal out to the people who worked at the local dump. These people dig through all the trash that comes out to the dump in hope of finding something they can sell. They support their families on about $30 USD (US Dollars) a month. They don’t have a lot of hope and they believe God doesn’t care about them because they have to dig through other people’s trash to support their families. It was a very sobering sight when we pulled into the dump. People were sitting on piles of trash everywhere waiting for the next garbage truck to pull in so they could begin sorting through it with the hope of finding enough scape metal or plastic to sell to support their family.

We set out and began to invite people down to listen to a short message and for some food. After about 20 minutes we had a pretty good crowd lined up waiting for us to serve the food. There was a quick message delivered then we began to portion out the food. Along with the meal there was a sport cooler filled with lemonade that we were also passing out.

As the serving progressed you could tell that the cooler was beginning to become empty. We stared by unscrewing the top to let air in and kept serving. Another 10 minutes passed, the two people who were serving the lemonade took the top off to see how much was left in the cooler. Apparently there was still a good bit left for they did not seem concerned. More people were served and they began to tip the cooler forward to keep the stream steady. At one point I heard them say to one another, “there is about 4-5 cups left.” Interested I began watching more closely. I watched as they filled up 4 cups, then 5, and then I lost count for they kept going. They looked in the cooler again after a few minutes, then looked at each other with confusion, “there is about 4-5 cups left….” they said.

The line began to dwindle down and we were down to the last few people in line and the lemonade was still flowing. As soon as the last person has been served I walked over to look in the cooler. As I looked down into the cooler I saw that there was still lemonade left. Astonished I looked at the people who had been serving it then at the crowd spread out around us eating the food and drinking the lemonade. I suddenly realized that a miracle was staring me in the face. God had provided more than enough lemonade so each person who was there was able to have a cup. While most people would say that it was just lemonade and what does it matter if everyone gets a cup, I say God cares, for I saw Him provide enough lemonade for every single person at that dump get a cup.

This situation reminded me of the time Elijah stay with a widow and her family during a drought and their flour and oil never ran out (1 Kings 17:16). It reminded me that God cares about the little things, whether it be enough oil during a drought or enough lemonade for everyone at a dump in Granada, Nicaragua. I am so thankful that He let me witness His greatness so I could know that He cares about the little things as much as the big things.
